This painting is one of an occasional sub-series of text paintings in which the texts function as identifying labels on elements within a depicted environment. I am here investigating the relationship of language to image, and with the question, can you depict a landscape without an image, only words? This painting is on the depiction end of that spectrum, while many others dispense with the “image” of a landscape altogether.

In instances like this in which there is an image, it’s the connections and disconnections between word and image that interests me. What is going on in this painting? Who are the protagonists saying goodbye and being said goodbye to? Why does there seem to be multiple “seasons” co-existing in this painting? What is on fire and why? Pairing an image with the texts creates multiple new pathways for generating questions.
